Halloween Cat Show in Halifax! 5 Meows

After watching an exceptionally long television marathon of "Toddlers in Tiaras", Vladimir decided he wanted to take a whack at being a show cat!Since I am a retired from the pageant circuit, and an expert in this field, I agreed to coach Vlad on being a beauty queen.
So this past Halloween, Vladimir and I travelled to Halifax for their two day, 10 ring competition! I am on the right, atop the "managers" pillow.
I loaned Vlad my luxurious coffin cage. Since I am also a professional designer, we had the perfect setup.

Since Vladimir is not a registered purebred like myself, we entered him in the "Household Pet" category. Any cat can enter, as long as they are neutered, and not declawed.Household pets are judged on their grooming, health and demeanor. To prepare for the event I put Vlad on a strict diet and excercise regime. After months of jogging, now he is wondering why we are just "sitting around" at the cat show, and when is the weigh in? Perhaps Vladimir was expecting a more athletic event, like a boxing match, because in EVERY ring he swore profusely and wrestled with the judges.
In his defense, the combativeness may have been due to my overzealous coaching. Since I am a bit Type A myself, I may have gone overboard on his "Diva" training. Also, all those "Toddlers in Tiaras" episodes might have clouded his conception of pageantry.This is how a happy show cat should appear in the ring.And this is Vladimir, after taking a swing at two other contestants and spewing profanities at the judge.
In spite of his behavior, Vladimir did win a first place title! That judge loved his soft, immaculately groomed skin. Out of the other 9 rings he won a 6th, two 8th, a 9th and two 10th place positions. Since he was only competing against 11 other cats, you can see how his poor anger management may have skewed the results. Here he is, gnawing on his ribbon.

A great aspect of this cat show was finally getting to meet "Roxy" our online pen pal!Additionally, we got to dress up for the "Best Feline Halloween Costume" contest. Vlad decided to be a big hairy spider! I am very proud of him, since I taught him about "irony".
I wore my home made "Dracula" ensemble. I was especially delighted with the fit of my widows peak skull cap, which took mom 5 hours to make.
Here I am in costume at the cat show. Notice anything missing? Yes! My idiot staff LOST my widows peaked skull cap. I do not want to talk about it further in case I lose my temper. Besides, Mom was quite upset too.
The feline costume competition was formidable! There was a Luke Skywalker....
...and a tipsy Mickey Mouse....
My favorites were the "Pirate with a Parrot",
and the "Cat eating Shark".
This witch was adorable!
and my friend "Roxy" went with a sexy fairy getup.
Although I did not use those exact words around Roxy's brother, our other pen pal, a gun toting cow cat.This gorgeous guitar player won "Best Feline Costume"!
Cat shows can be a bit platitudinous in between rings.
So I brought a good book...
...and listened to some tunes on my ipod.
Vladimir spent most of his time napping,
or repeatedly asking if he could open his candy blood syrup I.V bag yet.

Here is a video of me resting at our booth. I look a little alarmed because I did not recognise the videographer, and wondered if they had a filming permit!
Daddy won Best Costume for humans, with his "Sponge Pocket" suit! I wonder what kind of spills he was asked to mop up?

Of course Vladimir was only interested in his Winners Ribbon!
He insists on taking it to bed with him every night, and gazes at it for hours.
All in all, It was the most fun I have had at a cat show yet! Both Vlad and I gave it 5 meows out of 5! We will not be at another show for a while though, unless we find another kitty to coach.
Vladimir decided he has reached the peak of his pageant career and is retired from the ring. Now he wants to become a manager, like me. Perhaps we will open a talent agency?

CA-R-MA "Cat Walk" Fundraiser

This September Vladimir and I participated in Moncton's third annual CA-R-MA Cat Walk! Cat Rescue Maritimes is a registered charity that traps, neuters and nurses homeless feral cats. This is "Pebbles", a volunteer cat who not only organised the event, but also won first place for securing $640 in pledges! Incredible! All three of us were featured on the local news that evening. It was obvious from chatting with Pebbles, that she had killer managerial and business skills. She also had good taste in vehicles!Of course you are probably curious about an imperative detail of the marathon... What were we wearing? Vladimir borrowed my red "Roots" hoodie, kindly given to me by a fan, over a nylon "Canada" tank. He is so enthusiastic about becoming a Canadian he has been wearing it all summer. It is starting to smell.
I wore my new "Team Azrael" T shirt that Daddy made. I am secretly hoping to catch some smurfs during the walk and brought my salt shaker, just in case.Here are some dogs that came out to support the cause! Above is "Mocha" and below is "Bailey". They had great smiles for my photographer.Here we go! We opted to line up in the rear, so the less athletic would have a better chance against us.Although I am highly skilled at leash walking, I was concerned about working up a sweat and losing my grip.So Mom found me some perfect cat sized sweatbands! Here I am rounding a corner in the lead position! To maintain speed by reducing drag, I keep my ears in an aerodynamic pose.
While I power through the first quarter, Vladimir decides to take a nap! Vlad is not accustomed to a leash so he drove the stroller.Look Vlad, these cats are in a stroller too.Oh Noes!! That Vente Soy Latte and power bar I had for breakfast seem to be causing me some trouble!I needed to make an emergency bathroom pit stop in the middle of the race....was it the Starbucks or the energy bar that caused this intestinal setback?? I may sue..
Drats! Now I am in last place!Might as well slow down and enjoy a leisurely walk!Daddy decided to come to my rescue...
and puts me in the stroller with Vlad, but we are too late!Oh well! There is always shopping instead! Global Pet Foods was there with an assortment of toys.Vlad found a bag of catnip fish and began rolling uncontrollably in it. He resembled a toddler thrashing on the ground demanding a toy!....How embarrassing! The Global Pet food lady gave him a free one and then he behaved himself. Smart boy!
We even met another Sphynx after the walk! This is Louie. He is a beautiful, friendly, large boy, even bigger than Vladimir!
This is Max, a gorgeous red head like myself.
Vlad decided to try out some more playthings while I schmoozed with the other participants.
We won 2nd place for raising $301 in pledges and got a fabulous prize!
Here it is: "The Vista 150 Almond!" A special type of luxury box, just for cats.
For some strange reason, the "Vista 150 Almond" was stuffed with a bunch of communications gear...
The purpose of all that stuffing must have been to ensure the "Vista 150 Almond" held its shape during transport. But it only took seconds to dump out...and then we could start enjoying our prize! I discovered it is PERFECT for sitting IN...

and Vlad determined it was GREAT for sitting UPON! He also realised it was great for GNAWING ON...
and HOLDING important things...

and it can even KEEP YOU COMPANY while napping!The "Vista 150 Almond" has so many applications! I do not know how we managed without one for so long. What a fabulous prize!!! All right Vlad, it is my turn with the box now...you are hogging it!
Vladimir and I give CA-R-MA and their fundraising walk 5 meows out of 5. It was wonderful to help less fortunate kitties, exercise in the park on a sunny day and meet new friends.

Moncton "River of Pride" Parade

Before I recount my latest action in the Moncton, NB Pride Parade, I should introduce you to my new sister "Bella". She lived in Michigan with Vladimir (whom you met in my last blog) for a year, so they are bosom buddies. Prior to then, we are unsure of Bella's background, although she insists she is an exiled Russian princess. Unfortunately, Bella and I tend to clash, probably because of our similar "prima donna" personalities. After some scratches appeared on Bella's face, and her staunch refusal to wear a helmet, I was sentenced to these pink sparkly claws of shame. Although they are quite fashionable, I am seriously crabulated about my weapons' temporary sheathing. Like myself, Bella is highly perspicacious. This was evident on her drive home from Michigan, when my crew mysteriously found themselves in front of the Quebec Aquarium, completely off course.
Here is Bella looking innocent and denying any knowledge of the GPS route's baffling change in destination. My people are convinced it was just a glitch, but I know the truth.So this summer I decided to include my siblings Vladimir and Bella in Moncton's annual Pride Parade to teach them about Activism. Elaborate costumes are imperative for rallies! Here is Vladimir in a trendy punk tutu dress that camouflages his ample bottom. We all wore homemade rainbow necklaces.
Bella chose a rainbow leotard that is sure to make her stand out in traffic. Of course, she and I have similar taste in clothing and accessories.
I was miffed by her decision since I picked out the exact same outfit!! A lengthy squabble ensued that almost came to fisticuffs, but the Pride's spirit of solidarity inspired us to keep the matching ensembles.
Once costumes were established, I had my people build our floats. Mine is pictured here in the background, with Bella in her own carriage because she does not like to be "touched". Here is the glittering banner attached to the front of my float showing my website.
Since we live in the maritimes, I chose an ocean theme. The float itself is a shopping cart draped with thundering wave fabric. On the left side Mom made this ship with my photo in it!
And on the right side she pinned a life size picture of me to a surf board.
The top of my ride was filled with down pillows and I was delighted with the results! The sequined banner was particularly eye catching.
While everyone got set up Vladimir took one of my people for a walk around the starting grounds.
Here I am in my slinky unitard. Dad said I should be in an "Under Armour" commercial. I relaxed in the car before facing my big crowd of fans. What? Am I on already?
Once I climbed into my float I realised I should have designed one with a roof to keep out the hot sun. Where is my sun visor???!!! Who is holding my parasol??Bella had plenty of shade in her 1950's pram. Drat! My people left my sun umbrella in the other car at the end of the parade route! Ridiculous planning. I should have fired the whole team,
AFTER pushing my float in the procession. Luckily I enjoyed being draped in my cotton blankie.
I did not however, like being draped in Vladimir. Hello!! I am being trod upon here!!! What are you doing in front anyway? I am the star and you are in training.
Vladimir was so "pumped" about the demonstration he refused to sit still and kept trampling all over me!
So Daddy decided to carry him instead.
Ah! Much better. Now I am travelling like a true celebrity. Off we go!Here in Canada, people of the same gender can marry and divorce. Since 1992, soldiers of any sexual preference have been free to serve their country. That makes me proud to be Canadian! This gorgeous French Bulldog from Quebec looks equally proud standing with his two Daddies.Vladimir really seemed to revel in all the attention of my supporters!It was too hot to stay in costume though, so we did most of the march in the nude. Here is my baton twirler strutting in front of me. After the cavalcade we all gathered in Riverfront Park for refreshments and entertainment. Vladimir and I surveyed the stage together from the back window of our stroller.While Bella snoozed in her buggy. This festive Shih Tzu terrier mix named Rudy stopped by to admire my float. However we were too sun drenched and sleepy to chat.
Vladimir, Bella and I rated the Moncton Pride Parade 4 meows out of 5. We deducted one meow because we were slightly disappointed with the human turnout this year.... but it was still pretty fabulous.

Shediac Flea Market - 5 Meows

This summer I had a sudden urge for antiquing and decided to attend the Shediac Flea Market! Here are Daddy and I posing outside the ticket booth.For this adventure I wore my checkered skull tank because I was feeling a little goth.
It has some punk-esque side snaps that accentuate my svelte figure.
I invited my recently adopted brother "Vladimir" to accompany me. He moved up here from Michigan a few months ago and speaks with an American accent.
Vladimir mimicked my goth look with this "Skellanimals" T shirt. Mom had to make it especially for him, because he is too plump for my accoutrements. That is good though, because I do not like to share.
Speaking of sharing, Vlad and I decided to drive our new "Petzip" stroller to the flea market. The good thing about gaining a brother is getting a larger, fancier stroller! It has rear suspension, off road tires, two exits and a cup holder.
Vladimir is not so hot at walking on a leash yet, and I do not have an abundance of patience so the stroller is an excellent idea.
We head straight to the pet accessory vendor, and Vlad finds the perfect T shirt! It says "I'm not Fat, just Fluffy". It was a hot day so we decided to visit the Lemon Maid booth first.
Speaking of lemons, the breed standard for the Canadian Sphynx are large, lemon shaped eyes. Which of course mine are, and that is why I won so many ribbons in my pageant career!
Oooh! Our lemonade is ready! When this photo was taken, Daddy was complaining to Mom that there was "no point in buying me lemonade because I was not going to like it."
Delicious! This is where Mom told Daddy he was full of crap.
Lemonade makes me pucker!! This is the best concoction I have ever tasted!
It is so delectable I ask for some to go in my travel "Gulpy".
If you look closely you can see splashes of lemonade on my nose. I am a sloppy drinker.
Vladimir is not so interested. He is not the sour puss that I am.
When they hear I am a reporter, the Lemon Maids give me their business card..
and a lemon muffin! Absolutely scrumptious.
Next we shop for some books. After reading this one, I am now on the lookout for some wigs!
We inspect some wood crafts. Where are the cat shaped paper towel holders?
Perhaps more rabbits shop here than cats.
Oh what is that?
Look Vlad, another stroller! Hmm. No, these tires simply will not do.
This beautiful antique trunk could hold all my microfiber blankets, and look at the lovely patina!After perusing the flea market we hit Shediac's legendary lobster monument, where all serious tourists have their picture taken.
We give the Shediac Flea Market, and the town's enormous crustacean 5 meows out of 5.

Naked on Bourbon street, N'awlins

Everyone who travels to New Orleans must visit Bourbon Street, named after the ruling French royal family "The House of Bourbon" when the city was founded. Here I am trying to climb up the street sign to have my photo taken. However, someone must have greased the pole so Daddy had to hold me up.
The first spot we hit was "Fat Tuesday" for some Daiquiris. Here is uncle Scott who was part of my camera crew that day.
And here I am with "brain freeze" after a few sips. Despite my numerous wrinkles I was asked for ID and thus had to drink a non alcoholic nectar.After having read Jerry Strahan's "Managing Ignatius - The lunacy of lucky dogs and life in New Orleans", in addition to John Kennedy O'Toole's "Confederacy of Dunces", I was delighted to come upon a Lucky Dogs hot dog cart! Bourbon street is not limited to the alliterative "bars, blues and boobs". There are many colourful shopping spots. Here I am trying out a Mardi Gras mask......and an alligator head.
Marie Laveau's House of Voodoo is a must if you need some magical assistance. It is also a small museum. The auspicious staff helped me choose a Voodoo doll.
For dinner we went to Sammy's and munched on seafood Jambalaya, and deep fried Alligator. Delicious. I even spoke French with the Creole chef!
Then we enjoyed a jazz concert in Musical Legends Park with "Steamboat Willie"! He is one cool cat! Here we are after the show.
One of greatest elements of New Orleans is how fanciful music turns strangers into partners for few minutes!
Speaking of music, the main reason for my trip to Bourbon street was to hear my idol "Big Al Carson" sing. I have his Christmas CD at home, and was excited to hear him live! Big Al plays regularly at "The Funky Pirate". Here is daddy holding me outside the bar because the speakers were too loud indoors.
During intermission I had the pleasure of posing for a picture with him! But after that I listened outside because the high decibles.
The Funky Pirate is also famous for its "Hand Grenade" drink! Another great aspect of New Orleans is its open container liquor laws. Wherever you stroll, you may bring your beverage, as long as it is not in a glass.
Here I am drinking out of my souvenir "hand grenade" cup. Fabulous!
I was not the only animal working on Bourbon street that night, and that is not a reference to the crowd. This is "Ace". He does crowd control and public relations. Here we are watching an impromptu brass band.
"Ace" even had his own squad car number! It is branded on him along with the shape of the state of Louisiana.
Bourbon street is decadent and exciting, and as long as you do not mind a little nudity, you are bound to agree with me and give it 5 meows out of 5.

New Orleans' Cemeteries

Next on my list of "places to visit in New Orleans" were their renowned "Cities of the Dead". This Spanish style above ground internment was adopted after their reign in the 1780's and solved the problem of the cities' high water tables.
Early settlers first tried to stop coffins from rising and floating by drilling in holes, or filling and covering them with rocks.
First we went to Metairie Cemetery where I was drawn to the Brunswig family Egyptian tomb. Hellooooo? Anyone home?
Drats. It is locked. Not much hope of an interview here.
Put me down Daddy, I need to investigate.
Well this Sphinx outside certainly shows they have some style!
However, I think I am the more handsome of the two. Does this make my feet look big?
Ooh! What is over there?Metairie Cemetery began as a racetrack in 1838, but became damaged in the civil war and was converted into this final resting place in 1872. The outline of the racing course is still visible in the placement of the graves. Metairie is known for its magnificent monuments, and was listed by Forbes as one of the top 10 best burial grounds. Louis Prima is among the affluent deceased resting here!I like to enjoy all the small details in the stone work.
The tree trunk to the left is a funerary symbol for a short life.
This mausoleum with a large standing angel is very interesting! I wonder what she is looking at?Hmm. You can see a lot from up here!
Hey is that a Green Anole?
Gotcha! I I told mom I was trying to help him find his family plot but she made me spit him out! She ruins everything. So much for my little snack.....er good Samaritan deed.... it tasted sour anyway.Green Anoles are arboreal lizards native to the southeastern US, Texas and Louisiana. They have special toes that enable them to climb smooth vertical surfaces.
As we drive away I watch out for more lizards.
Then I decide to look at something more beautiful....my reflection!
Next we do some strollering in St. Louis Cemetery #3.
You may notice my black leather harness has "skull" studs.
St. Louis Cemetery #3 was created in 1854 and was originally named the Bayou Cemetery, because of its proximity to Bayou St.John. Before that, the land was used as a Leper Colony!
After the great Yellow Fever outbreak in 1853 though, the city needed another graveyard more than it needed a Leper Colony, so the land was diversified.
Sniff, sniff. Smells like granite!
This cemetery is in great condition, and is still a popular resting place. In fact there is a waiting list to be buried here.
I was very impressed with the Iron work here. These are likely cast iron which became popular in America in the 1850's due to increased availability of zinc. Before that wrought iron was used in older New Orleans cemeteries. So there you have it, the cemeteries in NOLA are beautiful, historic and even have snacks! Additionally, I highly recommend strollering to cover such large grounds. Metairie, and St.Louis #3 graveyards have my 5 meows out of 5.

New Orleans Renaissance Arts Hotel and Bayou Boogalou

During my recent visit to the Big Easy, I spent three pampered days at the Renaissance Arts Hotel. Located on Tchoupitoulas street in the Arts district beside the French quarter, this place even sports a rooftop pool! Although the staff are friendly and accommodating, there is a "no pet" policy. However, service animals and certified therapy pets, such as myself, are welcome.
The lobby boasts three glorious Dale Chihuly chandeliers that inspire visions of Mardi Gras. But what really impressed me were the fabulous windows!

For sunbathing.... ...or regular bathing. The chairs are upholstered with a smooth fabric, perfect for lounging and sucking on your tail. And, if you fall off mid slumber, the carpets are well padded to prevent injury. The 500 thread count Egyptian cotton sheets, with duck down duvet, mattress topper and pillows were a big hit with me! For only $1500 USD you can buy the set, including the mattress and box spring! And there is a blueberry cheesecake from the hotel restaurant that will knock your socks off, if you wear them.Hold all my calls.
One of the best things about N'awlins are all the Festivals! The Mid City Bayou Boogaloo, founded after the hurricane Katrina disaster, is a delight of music, food and art.
Here I am being greeted by a fellow red head! Only 1-2% of the human population carry the two necessary copies of a recessive gene on chromosome 16. There were lots of booths at the festival featuring wearable local art.
How do I look?
Mr. Joshua Lee gave me some photography tips when I visited his picture booth.
Daddy bought me some catfish beads to wear at the Boogaloo so I would look like a local. I think I should have gotten two more strands because I have 6 nipples.
This is P.T (Pigeon Toe) a gorgeous bloodhound I met while listening to a blues band. First I got a picture of P.T with his daddy, and then I asked P.T for an interview. Apparently naked cats trigger the prey drive in some hounds, or maybe he found my questions offensive, because right after this shot he tried to eat my face!
After that I made Daddy carry me for while.
Danger works up the appetite! I shared some stuffed, deep fried mushrooms and crab cakes with my crew. Delicious.
Then I posed for pictures with some new fans... ...and checked out the pet refreshment tent. I was hoping for some Abita Turbodog?
They had no local beer, but I did get a bandanna..and a chance to win a rubber ducky! The day ended with me watching for real ducks on the historic Bayou St.John. I give New Orleans' Renaissance Hotel and Bayou Boogaloo both 5 meows out of 5. Tasty food, funky music, friendly people and clean sheets. Nothing better than that!

Ponga's Pet Palace - 5 Meows!

This is my first review from my recent business trip to Louisiana! Whenever I travel, I like to scour local pet stores for unique aparrel. My GPS led me to "Ponga's Pet Palace", and I was DELIGHTED with what I found! Upon entering, I was met with dozens of racks of vestments, from hand made garments to popular brands, in a plethora of colours and sizes! There are even tasty donuts and sparkling accessories, including hair clips and harnesses.

This well equipped establishment is too much for just one person to manage, so a few animals handle different departments...
Belle, a superbly coiffed dog runs the hotel facilities and reception...

While Shrek, the ogre sized grey tabby on the left, handles the grooming business and laundry. His expertise is "hot towel" inspection.

Fiona obviously runs the clothing department, but also helps in grooming. Here she is modelling a beautiful dress that matches her eyes!
To see the other pets working at Ponga's Pet Palace, check out their website. Erin, who named her business after her beloved dog "Ponga", was kind enough to give me a tour of the palace.

In addition to a pet boutique, and spa there is a pet hotel and daycare! Here is one of the dog rooms, equipped with a real bed and television.

And these are the cozy cat rooms furnished with kitty condo's.

All the walls are hand painted with pretty murals. The cat section has birds and koi....

..and the dog kennels have cheerful roofs and hydrants.
Despite having high fashion, Ponga's Pet Palace has excellent prices and accomodating staff. Erin helped me try on all my clothes, and laughed off my Diva-esque hissing and yowling fit.

I loved the fit of the casual canine brand so much I got a few more tanks, all size small.

I was so impressed with "Ponga's Pet Palace" I gave them 5 meows out of 5. Their premises were exceptionally clean, and their selection and staff were exemplery. Located at 69160, Hwy 59, in Mandeville, Louisiana, they were worth the trip!

A Well Planned Wedding - 5 Meows

As a celebration of love, and in preparation of my peoples upcoming numptuals, I decided to take a crack at being a wedding planner! I deduced the best place for a naked cat to study the matrimonial arts would be a wedding convention. So I packed up my crew and headed to the annual Moncton Wedding Show! First on the agenda was a bridal fashion show. I had to stay away from the loud speakers because of my sensitive ears...
..but fortunately cats have excellent vision over distances. You guys are taking notes on these patterns and colours right?
Next, since I am not not worried about fitting into a dress, I am off to sample the cakes!! I wonder if these zebra striped cupcakes taste like the real thing?
When my people asked the "Glamour Cakes" representative If I could get a close up shot with the merchandise, he looked completely horrified and sputtered "No, no, no, no." So I crossed them off my vendor list and moved on!
The champagne people had no qualms whatsoever with a Sphynx cat close up shot! Of course everyone knows alcohol and nudity are often synonymous.
Mmm! A fragrant fruity bouquet with a hint of Niagara grapes. Delicious!
Another activity that often occurs after alcohol consumption is tattooing! Here is a less permanent Henna alternative. Bridal Hennaing dates back to the Usko-Mediterranean civilization during the Neolithic period.

Oooh! A bubble machine! Bubbles are a party "must have".

Speaking of parties, this is the party bus!!! I look very serious in this picture because partying is serious business. Woo Hoo!

The party bus is loaded with speakers, a bar, disco lights and even has a pole dancing instrument!

After the bus I checked out some chandeliers and table settings...

This traditional design was my favorite, perhaps because it complemented my "love machine" outfit so well.

After all my hard work, my people decided to traipse off to the local courthouse! They did promise me they would have a large wedding and reception next year....over which I could have full reign.

Despite the short notice, I was still able to dig up a clean tuxedo.

That is when Daddy told me I was not his only "Best Man"! Apparently, he needed someone who could sign the wedding certificate...

So here is uncle Scott behind me, showing off his opposable thumbs. I like to remind him that he is the 2nd best man whenever he brings out the "thumb" card.

While we waited for the ceremony to start I snooped around the courtroom. That is when the judge entered and informed us very sternly that this was not the place for animals!!!

My people explained that I was a very well mannered, certified therapy pet that has visits people in the hospital! The judge decided to let me stay! However as soon as she started speaking, something strange came over me...

...and I began to HOWL! I did not just meow, I CATERWAULED! I yowled, and Raowled and no one could shut me up! My people were extremely embarrassed because I had never behaved in this manner before!

I have sat quietly through dozens of school plays and dance recitals! I do my own banking and grocery shopping without a peep! No one can understand what has gotten into me, least of all myself!

Here is Daddy gritting his teeth in a fake smile, signalling for me to be removed from the room before the judge kicks everyone out...

So I spent the rest of the ceremony on a bench outside the room, smiling sweetly at the bailiff, with my pie hole clamped shut!

Once the judge left, I silently posed for pictures with everyone! Here we are from left to right,

Delta Kills Cats

I strongly urge all my fans to read this post, even if news of animal trauma makes you feel ill. This is not just another heart breaking pet story that will leave you feeling helpless. Snicker’s story should enrage and impel you to spread the word and help other pets.

This story also has a personal aspect. I was shipped via Delta’s cargo hold to my people in winter! My people were assured I would fly comfortably in a climate controlled environment. My mom is a retired vet tech and my people consider themselves very knowledgeable regarding animal safety, but they were shocked to learn how Snickers died, and how Delta dealt with the incident. Snickers was a beautiful 16 wk old Sphynx kitten that was shipped to Heather Lombardi from Salt Lake City International Airport to Bradley International Airport in Hartford County, Connecticut. Snickers’ breeder had been shipping her kittens with Delta for 10 yrs without any problems.

Delta claims to ship pets comfortably in a climate controlled environment for $289.94. You can even pay an extra $70 to ensure your pet is extracted from the plane quickly (which Heather did) There are also weather safety precautions that prevent pets being flown if the temperature in either the arrival or departure city is below 10 degrees Fahrenheit.

Here is what happened upon Snicker’s arrival, in Heather’s own words:
“We arrived at the airport at 8:15pm, camera & 2 kids in hand to pick up our long awaited new arrival. We immediately went to baggage claim where we would pick her up from her long flight from Utah. When we arrived, we were told to go sit by the conveyors for luggage & that as soon as the plane was unloaded, they would bring our new family member out to us.
We waited & waited & at 8:50 I went to the baggage claim & asked for an update. I told the woman that the kitten was a Sphynx & had no hair & that I was beginning to worry since it was only 7 degrees outside. I was told the flight had arrived on time (8:40pm), but to sit back down, that the cargo hold latch was stuck, but they were doing all they could & would bring her out as soon as they could.I wasn't incredibly alarmed, After all, I paid $290 for her to be in a climate controlled cargo area. I figured she would be fine as long as she wasn't outdoors.
At 9:30pm, they brought the carrier out to me & the woman who handed the carrier to me told me I should take her out & that the carrier was very cold. She removed the zip zip ties & I took the carrier to the floor & opened the door. The kitten was ICE cold, limp, and unresponsive.
I IMMEDIATELY put her into my coat, grabbed my kids by the hands & ran out of the airport to get her into my car & cranked up the heat putting all vents on her as I rubbed her trying to warm her up.She couldn't lift or control any limbs, her breathing was labored, she had a blank stare in her eyes, and she let out a meow. As if to say help me -- please.
We rushed her to the emergency vet clinic, but to my utter devastation, on the drive, she let out a blood curdling cry & went completely limp as we frantically drove to the vet. When we arrived, I literally ran in, and gave her to the nurse who whisked her into the back. After 10 minutes, a vet came out & told me that she that she was "DOA" and that there was nothing they could have done to save her. There was nothing I could have done to save her either.
The vet then explained to me that once a plane lands, the cargo compartment depressurizes & there is no longer climate control. She told me that she didn't stand a chance in this freezing weather sitting in the Delta Cargo hold for almost 50 minutes.
I spent the rest of the night last night crying & more or less having a nervous breakdown. She died cold, lonely & scared. Her last hour of life was spent frozen & unable to escape. I am so utterly devastated -- I cannot express to anyone how this feels. I am so sad for her, her little 11 week life lost for no reason. A tragedy that could have been prevented if the airline had valued her little promising life." After speaking with Heather on Sphynxlair, I was horrified to learn how callously she was being treated by Delta since this incident. The first insult seems to be that pet deaths are dealt with by the baggage claims department.

Heather permitted me to read ALL her correspondence with the luggage claims department and I was shocked by their apathetic response. Even though I read a quote from a Delta rep. in a newspaper article stating how empathetic they were to Snickers’ owners, this was not apparent in Delta’s letters to Heather!

To make matters worse, an airline employee who wishes to stay anonymous, contacted Heather with some startling information. They said not only are pilots aware of EVERY animal on board each flight, they are also capable of turning the climate control back on even after depressurization. Another source mentions there is more than one way to get into the cargo bay of a plane. So if the door latch was truly stuck, Snickers could have been removed another way. Unfortunately I was not able to verify these facts.

One would expect at the very least, that Delta would reimburse Heather for the monetary value of Snickers, plus the deathly plane fare, and vet bills. (Aprox. $2000). Of course that would never replace a dear pet, but it would recoup out of pocket expenses.

Delta was kind enough to offer the cost of Snickers ticket plus $50. They arrived at this number by the following equation: Dimensional value is determined to be .50 cents per pound. Snickers weighed 3 lbs +his carrier was 20lbs. This equals $11.50, however there is a $50 minimum.

Delta’s heartlessness does not stop here. Here is a screen shot of what some Delta pilots posted on their online forum. It says “If snickers had only been packed with peanuts, they’d all be satisfied” and “Am I the only one who was thinking this?” above the photo of a Snickers Ice Cream Bar.
Another Delta pilot on page 5974 of this forum discusses all the Sphynx owners on Sphynxlair that have rallied around Heather in support, by saying this: "From what I can tell from her blog / forum posts, women who dress hairless cats in hats and call them "my babies" are going to boycott Delta Air Lines. Not sure if that boycott includes our own Flight Attendants."

During my research for this story I discovered some more articles about Delta and pet transport. Dog That Escaped From Delta Flight Found Dead , My Dog Died Under Delta's Care, And Airline Blows Me Off (headline exists but link is missing),Entire Dog Lost, Delta Offers $200 Credit and Delta Paid $2800 For Lost Dog Valued At $20,000

According to the American Department of Transportation, Between November of 2009 and October of 2010, 33 animals died, 11 were injured and five were lost during air transport. Of those, Delta reported 12 deaths, four injuries and one loss. American Airlines reported eight animal deaths, while Continental Airlines and United Airlines each reported four and Alaska Airlines three. Hawaiian Airlines and American Eagle had one each.

It is important to note that DOT records animal deaths in transit, but no one keeps tabs on how many die of cold or heat in cargo holds or elsewhere. Although you would assume pets are picked up from the plane in a heated or cooled van, many are left on the runway waiting with luggage and are transported in flatbed trucks exposed to the elements! I was expecting PETA to be all over Snicker’s story! However all I could find were these two paragraphs on their web site:
“When Heather Lombardi considered transporting her kitten, Snickers, by airplane, she was assured that the cargo hold was climate-controlled. What she wasn't told was that the climate in the cargo hold was only controlled in flight. After the plane landed and Snickers was left in the hold for 50 minutes without heat, Heather found the kitten cold and unresponsive. At the time, the temperature outside was just 7 degrees. Snickers died as Heather rushed her to the vet. Our condolences to Heather on the loss of her companion.
Unfortunately, this is far from an isolated incident. Even the biggest hearts and the best intentions can't protect animals from the dangers of a cargo hold. Please, if you're traveling with your animal companions, take the extra time and effort to do it right—they're worth it.”

Since most of you are familiar with PETA’s anti fur campaign which uses celebrities to flog their slogan “I’d rather go naked that wear fur”….I do not think I need to point out the incredible Irony of of PETA’s paltry reaction to Snickers’ plight.

Perhaps if Snickers were “wearing fur” PETA would have responded to his death with more gusto.

There are so many mistakes and missed opportunities in this sad story, it may seem like too much to take in!

Here is a summary of MY concerns with Snickers flight on Delta:
- Customers are not informed that “climate controlled” only means the temperature will not go below 40 F (4 C) and that once depressurization occurs, climate control is lost. If people did know this, I do not think they would ship cargo.
- Customers do not know their pet could be left sitting on the runway or a flatbed truck, exposed to the weather, while luggage is dealt with.
- The cut off temperature for airlines to ship a pet is 10 degrees F (-12 C). When Snickers arrived it was 7 degrees Fahrenheit. Although 10 is still too low for many pets, this cut off should have ensured Snickers did not ship and may have prevented his death.
- It may have been possible to turn climate control back on, and/or access the cargo bay another way in case of door malfunction, I am inclined to conclude Delta staff just did not care about Snickers.

As a result of Snickers’ story, I do not think any animal should fly cargo. Even though millions of animals fly every year and the total injuries and deaths are considered low by comparison, it is not safe enough for a beloved family member.

If you have to have a pet transported there are other options.
- Buy a ticket and fly in the cabin with your pet if possible.
- Drive to the breeder yourself, or see if someone picking up a litter mate can help you with transportation.
- Use a pet shuttle service that can drive your precious cargo to you. Here is a link to one I have NOT used but have heard positive comments on Shuttle Pet .
- Use a pet airline that ONLY flies animals in the cabin, and monitors them in flight. Here is a link to Pet Airways that ships just animals in the cabin and checks them every 15 mins. Although I have no experience with this company personally, it sounds like a safe option. Heather Lombardi has created a facebook page for Snickers where you can leave comments and read updated information about her claim with Delta. Visit Snickers the Sphynx Supporters.

I shudder to think Snickers’ story could easily have been my own.

Cat in a Hat goes "Secret Santa" Shopping

Many of you follow this blog for my fashion expertise, so I feel obligated to tell you all about this season's latest fashion trend, the hat. Whether you call it a "Chapeau" or a "Touque", this winter, it is all about framing your face with headgear. Cat in the Hood. This super soft crocheted hood is so comfortable I doze off whenever I wear it! It was created with love by my artistic friend "Kerstin Wilson".

This "Trapper Hat" was sent to me by my Sphynx Lair chums "Tux and Twitch". They also gave me the convincing Santa disquise I wear at the top of the page!

"Tux" and "Twitch" totally know how to rock costumes! Here they are perfectly coiffed for a Halloween Ball!

Some of you may be familiar with the web forum "Sphynx Lair" of which I am a member. This is where I chat with other Sphynx enthusiasts around the world! We share photos, stories, and advice about the Sphynx breed and every Christmas we exchange "Secret Santa" gifts!

Last week I took my camera crew along on my "Secret Santa" shopping expedition. Mmm..."Hello Kitty" Popcorn...lets snack on this while we peruse the aisles!

Oooh! Festive lipstick! Tempting, but I do not know if my secret pal has a "Fall" or "Winter" complexion. Better be safe and just buy this for myself instead.

Oooh! An Oprah's book club selection! I love this "National Book Award" winning author ....but what if my secret Santa is just a kitten who can not read great works of literature yet? Just put one copy in the cart for me then...

Sniff...Sniff....Well minty breath is important, especially if you get caught under the mistletoe.

My people think it would be less complicated if I stuck to the Pet Department. Some people can not think outside the box! Now this "Lunch Pail" looks promising...

Never shop on an empty stomach! Pass me some of that "Hello Kitty" Popcorn people...I am working up an appetite here!

Brilliant! A desk top Sushi Bar with a drinking fountain on top! Unfortunately, this is slightly beyond my budget. Sphynxlair Santas may only spend up to $30.

Budgerigars smell delicious! I wonder if my Friend likes game? I bet the green ones taste like key lime.

Woo HOO! My favorite design of Jingle Balls packaged in bulk!!! These are very noisy and are easy to carry around in your mouth. Put them all in my cart please....What do you mean "Maybe Santa will bring me some?" I AM SANTA! Now put those opposable thumbs to work!

Well look at that! An assortment of toys in a delightful fish bag. Perfect!

Twilight Eclipse Premier at the IMAX

As you can see from the photo, I am a "Twilight" aficionado. It is not only the obvious Vampire connection that enthralls me! My romantic side is drawn to its passionate love triangles, which mirror another of my favorite novels, Wuthering Heights. This summer I had the tremendous opportunity to see Stephanie Meyer's 3rd book, Eclipse, brought to life at an Imax theatre premier! I had my people book tickets a month in advance.
Since the premier started at midnight, and the show was a few hours away from home, I had my people book a hotel room. I prefer to travel well rested!
I also invited my uncle Edward along so I would have someone intelligent to discuss the plot line and cinematography with. Here we are co ordinating outfits for the premier. Uncle Edward is named after "Edward Scissorhands", not "Edward Cullen", which is ironic since he is declawed. (We do not agree with declawing! Poor Edward came to us from the local shelter, allready missing his digits.)
Like any celebrity, I like to arrive at a movie premier in a fancy car! Fortunately, one of our family vehicles is a "Midnight Cherry" '85 Cadillac Fleetwood Hearse, so we did not need to rent a Limousine. What could be more fitting for a Vampire cat to travel to a Vampire movie in?

Mom purchased this coffin years ago at a garage sale. It is perfect for holding groceries when we go shopping. It also provides great privacy for my litter box, when we travel!
Here I am climbing on the back seat we had installed. We needed a vehicle that would fit our whole family....aka...my camera crew.

Edward and I were not the only ones that dressed up! Here is daddy in his "Team Werewolf" getup. Mom drew the tattoo on with a sharpie. It is not real.

In order to ensure the best seating, we had to line up 12 hours ahead. I had my people bring lawn chairs for maximum comfort. We were about 10th in line to enter the theatre.

While we were waiting I had my picture taken with the stars of "Eclipse".

I also made some new fans, Chad and Kia!

...and signed some autographs!

Uncle Edward had his picture taken with "Pussy Galore".

Uh Oh......trouble! That was right about the time ....

...that I was asked to leave the premises on account of my "not being a human!" Management were as unimpressed with my press credentials and registered therapy pet status, as my argument that "Edward" and "Jacob" are not human either.

So Uncle Edward and I were forced to READ about the "Eclipse" premier in the papers like every other commoner.

Like most boys, I prefer to do my reading in the washroom!

My people informed me that the Imax experience showed every bead of sweat on "Jacob's" skin! Upon returning home, Edward and I downloaded and watched "Eclipse" and gave it 5 meows out of 5. We will be first in line to purchase it when the DVD comes out.

Dove House Bed and Breakfast

On one of my various important business trips last year, I had the pleasure of spending the night in Sydney, Nova Scotia! Since it was winter, I was able to take in some ice fishing en route. The most arduous part of "sleep over" trips is finding an establishment that accepts felines.
Often, we are asked if I will be confined to a cage during my stay! A cage?! While I curse and mumble about how I will fit my laptop and charge my Ipod in a cage, my people are dialing the next listing in the phonebook. Dove House Bed and Breakfast, we were delighted to discover, welcomes feline travellers! There was no mention of a cage and they had free wireless Internet for my laptop!
Located in North Sydney, at 108 Queen st, just across the street from the water, they are the best place to stay if you have to take the ferry to Newfoundland.

I chose their cozy "First Mate" room on the ground floor.

I liked this room because of the HUGE window!and also because of the sparkly chandelier! Its position over the firm, yet springy bed helped me reach for those tantalizing, shiny orbs!I LOVED the texture of this quilted micro-velvet duvet!

and I found the matching nautical chair to be very fashionable. The bed does not look its best in these photos because I had been bouncing...er testing it... beforehand.

Here I am strutting along the window seat.

It was so wide I could even eat my snacks upon it!

Check out the shine on the night table! This B&B was impeccable, the cleanest place I have ever set a paw in. This is the bathroom where I took my bubble bath before bedtime. It also had a handy window seat for me to rest on while waiting for the tub to fill.
Upstairs is a lovely parlour where you can sit and relax or watch television. I was very fond of the oriental rug. Its muted colours provided great camouflage.

The fireplace made everything especially cozy....and the carpet smells good! Here I am checking out the mini bar!
The reason for such a spotless, orderly home may be because one of the owners is also feline! Everyone knows how clean and tidy cats like their environment to be.

My favorite part of Dove House was their delicious breakfast! They even provided me with a fork....how civilised!

Step away from my breakfast Daddy.......I do not care if you are also the camera man. My bacon does not need a close up any more than your face needs a claw in it! So with their savory breakfast, spotless rooms, elegant decor, convenient location, reasonable rates...
and abundance of windows.....I give Dove House 5 meows out of 5!

I am Canadian! -Moncton Canada Day Fireworks -5 Meows

Technically, I have dual citizenship because I was born in Iowa, USA. However, I have lived in Canada since I was four months old and my breed, the Sphynx, is also Canadian.Here is an example of the Canadian Flag, from ear to shining ear! The red sections on either end represent the Pacific and Atlantic oceans. Our national emblem, the maple leaf, has been associated with Canada since the 1700's.

Canada Day celebrates the anniversary of July 1st, 1867, when the British North America Act united the colonies, as provinces under the "Dominion of Canada". What does a naked cat do to celebrate Canada Day? I do the same as other Canadians....dress in patriotic colors and blow stuff up! Here I am checking the fuses for daddy. That is all I am legally permitted to assist with until I turn 18.

To make it more official, Daddy bought me this T shirt. It says "Daddy's little sparkler". I especially like the ruffled sleeves.

Usually Canadians gather in their backyards, or local parks to watch Canada Day fireworks. Every year we go to Moncton's Riverfront Park on the Petitcodiac river. This will be my THIRD year in attendance!

The long walkways and rolling hills give me a chance to show off my new stroller! My Fairy Grandmother bought it for me at "HomeSense". I used to make long trips in a human baby stroller, but this new pet one has a bug screen!

Here I am checking for fireworks, nope, none yet! While we wait for it to get dark enough, we enjoy the festivities put on by the city, such as music, rides and snacks.

On the way to the nacho stand, I stop to sign some autographs! My stroller is also a convertible, which permits true intimacy with my fans.

Cheese!!!

Right, back to the nachos people! We have a long day and night ahead. I need sustenance.

With a full belly, I am ready to party like a true Canadian.

OOOoooh! Balloon Animals! Fascinating! So much contorting, squeaking and then....

.....VOILA! A balloon Wiener dog!!! Hmmm, I could destroy you with the swipe of a single claw. This sense of power of is intoxicating!

Next I visited the tattoo station! I requested a maple leaf on my rear, but the tattoo artist, obviously unfamiliar with Sphynx anatomy, erroneously deposited it upon my head.

Thinking of my stomach again, I checked the water in the hopes of some good fishing!

However the tide was out and I did not want to go clam digging without my rubber booties.

Here is Daddy helping me put on my leash and harness so I can do some walking. Strollering is fun, but does not burn cheesy nacho calories like a good brisk walk!

I found a fantastic cedar scented litter box! These city park designers think of everything!

OOooh!!! A skateboard park!! Awesome!

Quick! Let me in my stroller! I need to show these people my radical, naked "Half Pipes"! Dudes, lets go!

Alright, there is such a thing as too much assistance! You may want to wash that finger later sir. (We really need to practice more with this pit crew!)

Drat! No helmet. No half pipes. Dudes forgot to pack my helmet! Must I constantly remind these people that I am a professional adventurecat! How can I do all my own stunts without the proper attire?

It is SO hard to find good people nowadays!

Here is the field where the fire department will be setting off the fireworks!

My people and I go searching for the perfect seat with the best skyline panorama.

This is the ideal parking spot! We have a view of the water, and I can watch the billowing flag!

...which is quite hypnotising. I am beginning to feel somnolent.

Perhaps just a quick snooze before the show starts. I want to be properly refreshed in time for the bursting flowers of flame!

Wooo Hoooo!! I hope you can see the fireworks over my head and mountainous ears!

I argued these shots were of too poor quality for my blog, but mom wanted to show that I really watch the fireworks.

Of course I watch the fireworks! How can my fans take my reporting skills seriously, if I do not see what I am reporting upon?

I will admit to seeing colour differently than humans though. Cats' retinas contain 80% rods, which show us black and white, and 20% cones, which show colour. Today's science suggests I can see blues, greens and yellows but not reds.

I CAN tell you that when this photo was taken, Mikey and I could clearly see the backs of our eyelids! Canada Day celebrations are exhausting even for professional reporter/adventurecats like myself!

Regardless of my ability to see red, I give Moncton's Canada Day Festivities 5 meows out of 5. Happy Canada Day everyone!

Spongebob Naked Pants at Alma Beach - 4 Meows

Our purpose for travelling to Alma Beach was to do a review on their infamous "Sticky Bun Shop". Alas, we arrived too late in the evening and they were closed! Fortunately, Alma is located on the "Bay of Fundy", another mind boggling attraction, almost as deliciously gooey as sticky buns!
According to the Canadian Tourism board, Fundy Bay has 50 foot tides, the highest in the world! At the time of our visit, it happened to be low tide....so all was not lost! Although we still had grumbling stomachs, my professional adventure cat skills saved the day. I decided to teach my people about surviving off the local flora and fauna. Low tide is really like a smorgasbord of flavor, if you know what to look for. Just to be clear, Daddy does not know what to look for. Step aside Daddy and let the professional handle this. There are many befuddling aspects to hunting that I will need to explain to you. Look! Ten feet down at two O'clock!

Mmm! Crab meat! (Not to be confused with human crabs, "Pthiris Pubis".) Looks succulent and it is already perfectly salted!

Scallops are very tasty! They have two edible muscles inside, but most westerners eat just the "adductor" muscle. In hungrier, less wasteful parts of the world, the other "Roe" is also eaten.

Muscles! Another delicious treat!

Again, not to be confused with human muscles...

Oooh! this one comes in a pretty blue!

However, nothing beats a rare, deep blue piece of beach glass!

Beach glass is not at all good for looking with though, unlike Alice in Wonderland's "Looking Glass".

Right, back to snacking! I have all I require as a carnivore, but my people are omnivores so they need vegetables. We need to find some Dulse! Nicknamed "The Salad of the Sea", this red plant is loaded with B vitamins, Potassium, Iron and Fluoride.

Um...No....not red, or plant like. Those are barnacles, only tasty to sea birds and colorblind imbeciles

....um...no..... again. We are looking for a RED seaweed people! This is clearly BROWN Rockweed, either Ascophyllum nodosum, a.k.a "Knotted Wrack" or the Fucus spp. "Bladder Wrack".....unimportant unless you need garden fertilizer or mulch.
How do these people get their pants on in the morning? Sniff...sniff. This is Chondrus crispus, or "Irish Moss", a popular food and thickening product! It will have to suffice as our Dulse substitute, since the tide is beginning to come back in!

Everyone is happy with full tummies! Good thing we all wore our hoodies. It is chilly by the ocean!

Fundy bay is not just about healthy snacks. The flotsam and jetsam also provide plenty of intrigue. Do you think this fantastic scratching post will fit in our hatchback?

Apparently not. I will have to leave it for some other adventure cat to enjoy. Oooh! fresh litter! Please excuse me for a moment...

"Pretty Kitty" Sweaters - From Russia with Love

Whether they fall victim to wear and tear from me doing all my own stunts, or shrink in the wash, the reality is: A naked cat living in Atlantic Canada goes through a magnitude of sweaters!

Since most sweater consumers are canine, it is difficult to find a good weave that complements my svelte, feline body shape.

After much thought, I turned my search to Northern Eurasia. Since Russia is the largest country in the world, and at times almost completely snow covered, I deduced they would be experts on sweater design.

I was right. Moscow based "Pretty Kitty" Haute Couture was conceived with the Sphynx cat in mind! I sent them my measurements and received these exquisite, adventurous patterns!

Before trying on my new sweaters, I had a meticulous bath to remove any dirt or body oils from my crevices.

First, I tried on my "Creamsicle" sweater. Daddy says this colour scheme makes him want to give me a big lick!

Although $27 is a bargain for wearable art, I have asked Daddy to refrain from licking my new Russian garments.

I LOVE this sweater because it is super fuzzy and complements my creamy skin tone. The little flower on the neck makes me feel luscious!

I was a little too sleepy and crabulated in my photos to do this sweater the justice it deserves. Here is one of "Pretty Kitty's" exotic Russian Sphynx models who shows it off with a smile!

This is my fish skeleton tank sweater. The bones are made with several shades of purple and accented with neat little black studs.

Speaking of studs, here I am modelling the back.....

Finally, here is my comfortable, grape, ribbed sweater!

It is easy to feel confident in clothes tailored especially for me! This sweater is clearly a perfect fit, just like the other two!

The stretchy, ribbed pattern lets me pounce and play for hours without feeling constricted.

It is like being completely naked, only warmer!

Naked Cat has Own Accessory Line - Interview with "Here NB" magazine

I was recently interviewed for "HERE" magazine, a free local paper covering the cities of Moncton, Fredericton and St.John, New Brunswick. The lovely Ms. Handysides, a "HERE" reporter, met with me at Dexter's flea market where I have a booth I run on weekends. We chatted and had a quick photo shoot. The resulting article and fabulous picture printed below were on page three this week!

These Bags are the Cat's Meow

The cat's pajamas.

Pick your cliché. They all apply to a Moncton flea market's resident muse and four-legged fashionista.

Nofuratu: a handsome, hairless, prized sphynx scales the cluttered shelves and tables of Dexter's Flea Market (14 Rabbi Lippa Medjuck Street) each weekend, acting as the living, breathing spokes-cat for his brand of reborn handbags.

"I wanted to turn him into this evil genius that had multiple businesses," his arty owner Aislynne said. "On his business cards, he's described as critic, philanthropist and entrepreneur. I like him having all these big titles - I think it's hilarious."

Aislynne and her husband Brett McKnight run a booth at the weekend market, filled with items bearing Nofuratu's wrinkled face. No kidding.

Among the handmade creations are handbags, retailing for $25 each.

"I wanted to turn him into a Donald Trump-esque designer. All designers have perfume and handbags, and I'm not going to make perfume. Who wants to smell like a cat?"

Constructed from pre-loved materials found in various discard piles and thrift shops, the utilitarian accessories are a textile mish-mash of buttons, ribbon, patch-work and yes, fur.

The irony isn't lost on the Havelock couple, who say a brown, mink-sided bag hasn't been hanging from their shelves for awhile.

As shocking, and well, ugly, as he may appear at first glance, Nofuratu is a prime specimen. His beauty is clearly skin-deep, proven time and again through various awards at cat shows around North America.

"He's just beautiful - I think he's stunning. People can relate to animals. I know I don't like dealing with people," Aislynne chuckled.

Fresh into retirement from the pageant and competition circuit, Nofuratu is about to embark on a new venture - pet therapy. Recently approved as a therapy animal, he'll soon visit patients in hospitals and extended care homes.
"He's just so easy-going - it works well," McKnight said.

Humanizing the two-year-old kitty may be the key to his award-winning personality, the couple say.

Nofuratu eats dinner from a plate in a high chair with the family each night. He sleeps under the covers. He goes for walks in a stroller. He has a four-foot long closet, jammed full of his own personal outfits and accessories.

"He's spoiled," Aislynne admitted.

"The highchair has its own little table. He doesn't eat from our table - anymore," McKnight added.

Despite shameless promotion through merchandise, a blog and Twitter account, Nofur's ventures aren't in vain. The couple donate a portion of proceeds gained through sales to local animal-related charities. In 2009, he was pushed in a stroller during Moncton's Walk For the Cure, and raised $200 for breast cancer research.

The sphynx also pays for his own clothes, through charging market-goers $1 to have their photo taken with him.

And as for the human brains behind the operation, Aislynne says though she loves him like a son, she isn't a crazy cat lady.

"I think I'm just crazy," she said. "I hate normal - it irritates me."

Nofuratu's Beauty Secrets

Many humans assume hairless cats require very little care where grooming is concerned. In reality, we Sphynx are just as demanding in this aspect as we are in everything else! Since we have no hair to wick away our body oils, we require a weekly bath.

Some Sphynx get bathed in a sink, or bucket or even the shower! I prefer my claw foot tub full off water and rubber duckies.

Just to be clear, I do not like baths! I tolerate them as a price I must pay for being beautiful and less stinky. We all have sacrifices we must make and beauty queens are no different!

Here is daddy washing my arm pits. Dirt seems to build up there. Some weeks if play my cards right, and my people are busy, I can get away without a bath for 2-3 weeks! We use baby wipes during that time to maintain my skin. Unfortunately, they are often cold, so I have put a baby wipe warmer on my accessory wish list!.

Accessories are vital to being a well groomed Diva! I have practically a whole salon of potions, lotions and equipment!

This is my “Diva” cosmetic case. I also use this as a suitcase for travel. It can hold an astonishingly large amount of toiletries, clothing and has a built in mirror!

Most Sphynx grooming kits include the essential toothbrush, toothpaste, nail trimmers, baby wipes, wash cloth, baby shampoo, ear cleaner, Q tips, tissues and coconut oil.

I have my people add scented flower candles and bathing cap for ambiance.

If you look closely at my satin harlequin bathing cap, you may notice the little yellow duckies!

Coconut oil helps work the dirt of skin without scrubbing hard. I use it on my nose, toes and bottom about 15 minutes before a bath. It tastes great!

One of my favorite things is my pink monkey clean up box! Tissues come out of the monkey’s face….

and cotton balls and Q tips are inside!

This is my salon chair. It has working pedals to make it go up and down!

After my bath mom bundles me in a hot towel and I curl up on my microfiber pillow with a warm chamomile neck wrap. While I start to doze off …. The REAL work begins. Fans with weak stomachs should probably skip this part!

…Mom starts with my head and removes my eye boogers! Since Sphynx have no eyelashes to protect us from dirt, we need our boogers wiped out once or twice a day.

Here is an eye booger example. I think this substance should be analyzed by the space program as a potential zero gravity adhesive .

Next comes the ears! Sphynx accumulate copious amounts of black sludge in their ears that many mistake for mites. This sample is actually much lighter than usual because mom cleaned my ears twice this week.

Lastly, mom cleans out my toe jam. You may notice Sphynx have very fleshy bulbous toes! Inside the skin folds of each toe, and around nail base we like to save up a greasy black sludge.

As an advocate for the environment, I recommend saving this material for the wheels of your rollerskates or bicycle chain. I believe the government stumbled onto this alternative to fossil fuels in 1982 and are in process of perfecting the refinement……(but you did not hear that from me.)

I try to clean my toes myself but do not do as good a job as mom. First she scoops out the black goop with a Q tip and then scrapes each toenail clean with a baby wipe before trimming it. I HATE having my back toes cleaned.

Here are my freshly pedicured tootsies! Now mom gives me a soothing foot massage and I forget I was angry about having my digits cleaned and cut.

Mom does such a good job keeping me clean, I like to give her a break and wash my own toys!

Here is my furry catnip mouse in the washer. Every time I wash my mouse, mom tends to freak out when she discovers it hiding amongst the socks. I think she should seek help for her irrational fear of bleached cottons.

Once I am squeaky clean I like to parade around in my tiara for a bit and then search for something filthy and malodorous to roll in!

Here are the results for The "Fundy Fanciers CCA Cat Club" online Cat show! .
This stunning pose, taken by the talented photographer Cindy Lutes, was my entry in "Best Purebred Adult". I did not win in this category, but here are the cats that did!

The First Place Winner was "Thaifong Rio of Ayuhaya" a Seal Point, Siamese owned and bred by Virginia Wheeldon of ON, Canada. I think this is the most beautiful feline in the world!

2nd Best of the Best Adult Purebreds was Himalayan # 57, owned by Diana Wardrope.

3rd Best of the Best Purebred Adults was this blue Exotic short hair # 143, owned by E. Smith.

Here are the winners for "Cutest Kitten! I also did not win this category because what could be cuter than moi, a single adorable Sphynx?

9 adorable Sphynx kittens posing together of course!! These naked beauties won first place. Their breeder and owner is Diana Johns, Baldnmore cattery

2nd "Cutest Kitten" went to this Silver Bengal "Karma" Owner/Bred by Diane Patterson.

3rd "Cutest Kitten" was "Larix Rock n Roll of Deverest" a Seal Lynx point, Himalayan kitten, bred by Svetlana Skliarova and owned by Nicole & Rene Menweg. I think this ball of fluff would be great to snuggle with!!

First place for "Candid Cat" went to these two buddies "Blissfield Forrest Butterfly Effect & Bindi" a Devon Rex and chihuahua, owned by Michelle Gilks

2nd Place for "Candid Cat" went to Moi! I was very excited to win a ribbon!

3rd place for "Candid Cat" was this dressed up diva, a Brown Patched Tabby & White, Household Pet, owned by Kelly & Christopher Farren. Fabulous outfit! and a very professional pose!

...and here is the "Viewers choice" winner with over 100 votes!!! Entry # 64 "Bella" a Seal Point Himalayan bred by Gary Pole and Owned by Heather Mykel.

I must have gotten a lot of votes from my loyal fans for my "Cutest Kitten" entry because I was 2nd runner up for the "Viewers Choice" award. There were no ribbons for 2nd place in this category but it was nice to be mentioned!

3rd Runner up for "Viewer's Choice" was another red head, a Maine Coon owned by Joyce Ayotte.

Now lets talk more about moi and my 2nd place "Candid Cat" ribbon!! Mom and dad hung it up to display but I had a better idea....

It was so pretty I decided to take it to bed with me!!!

Here I am kissing it before I go to sleep! MMMmm! Smells like victory!

Sleep Warrior

Like many felines, I am a professional napper. I am such an expert in the matters of sleep, I prefer to call myself a SLEEP WARRIOR! Here I go, off to WAR!The pillow is my SWORD. The blanket my SHIELD, and the Kingsdown Berringer No flip Pillow top with individually wrapped coils is my TRUSTY STEED. A key to satisfying sleep is having the proper equipment. This is my "Sleep Innovations" micro fibre pillow with massaging nubs.

Comfy pajamas and a hot water bottle with a knitted cover are "must haves" for winter hibernation.

....and everyone needs a well loved stuffed friend....or froggie

A "Snuggie" is also an excellent investment. Currently, the Snuggie is manufactured for humans and dogs but SLEEP WARRIORS must shatter stereotypes.

As you can see, the marketing tool of the Snuggie is its sleeves. So you can access your television remote without removing your arms from the blanket. I was skeptical, but it is true! The Snuggie permits hand movement while keeping you snuggled.

Sleep comes easier with relaxing pre bedtime rituals. Here I am watching the food network on my big screen TV. This makes me crave another popular custom....

The bedtime snack! Again, note my proper equipment....the correct tools are important for success!

A light and soothing elixir such as chamomile tea can help induce slumber.

Efficient sleep warriors are always on the lookout for new recruits!

Size and smell are unimportant. That is me beside "Horizen's" Neapolitan mastiff bottom.

Cats are often considered sleep experts because they snooze anywhere from 13-16 hours per day. Only bats and opossums would be better recruits at a whopping 20 hours per diem!

Another pivotal ticket to effective sleep is the ability to succumb WHENEVER and WHEREVER the sandman calls. I refer to this as a sleep emergency.
Although I often experience sleep emergencies, I try to be awake at dawn and dusk. This is called Crepuscular, a sleep pattern that cats likely developed because their prey is also most active at dawn and dusk.

Global positioning is also important. Whether that is locating a good sunbeam.... or finding a comfortable manner in which to position your body!

A good sleep warrior is prepared to wake suddenly and land on his feet!

Fundy Fanciers Halifax Cat Show 2009-Dedicated to Captain Phil Harris

As a professional stunt cat, seafood connoisseur and ship enthusiast, I have become a loyal fan of "Deadliest Catch".

Here I am up in my crows nest with my gear on, waiting for the show to start!

This entry is dedicated to one of my heroes, the late Captain Phil Harris of the "Cornelia Marie".

This July 2009, I put on my game face and competed in my 2nd cat show. Hosted by the Fundy Fanciers Cat Club , this "Tall Ships" themed event took place in Halifax, Nova Scotia.

First comes The Cage Match! Contest rules require ship themed cage decor. Blending my coffin cage, into ship scene was hard work!

We designed a scene of a coffin sitting on the dock waiting to be shipped. In this photo I am sitting on the ocean though, instead of in my coffin.

My coffin has a shipping address to Transylvania, and a "Keep out of sunlight" hazard sticker.

Here is an inside view of the coffin on the dock beside some dangling seagulls. Inside, I have lights and supplies for a long trip at sea!

Here I am gazing at my seagulls. They are fascinating! My Grannie made them for me. She also made the big 3D ship out of paper! I even have a lighthouse on the rocks! During the show I also sit on the dock and watch everyone. I am very proud of my Ship Themed display! My people are very creative!

Here I am accepting my Trophy and Ribbon for Best Decorated Cage! Mmm...smells like victory!

I have been fortunate enough to win "Best Decorated Cage" in all 3 of the cat shows I have entered! That makes "Cage Matches" my best talent.

Here i am posing with Daddy and three of my people. They are all wearing T Shirts with my photo and logo "Go Naked".

My prizes also include a fresh catnip pillow. Delicious!

The first round of judging get me this 8Th place ribbon.

Competition is tough! This beautiful boy won lots of ribbons!Here is a statuesque Cornish Rex. Most people mistake my breed for the Cornish or Devon Rex, even though they have hair. The Rex reminds me of Theophile Steinlen's famous cat art, painted in Montmartre, Paris during the peak of Art Nouveau.
I LOVE Art Nouveau! Here I am with my tail wrapped around my head and dreaming of posing for Hector Guimard!

Speaking of posing, here is the Halifax local news cameraman setting up to shoot me! This was my first television experience ! My people tried to get a copy of the footage to post here but could not find it.

I like this judge very much! He cuddles and plays with the cats while examining them.

This does not stop me from swearing profusely when it is my turn in the ring!

I do not dance Senior!

Alright, well perhaps just a quick waltz then.....you lead.

This is footage of me winning a First place ribbon! If you turn the volume up really loud you can hear me swearing, and the judge explaining his choice. Bravo!

Here is footage of me winning a second place ribbon in a different ring. Again it is hard to hear without high volume. There is no swearing this time.

Halifax Tall Ships Festival - 5 meows

This summer I was fortunate enough to be in Halifax, Nova Scotia, during the Tall Ships Festival! Growing up in the Maritimes has provided a great opportunity to develop my latest hobby: Amateur ship enthusiast!

The first step of nautical expertise is mastering the terminology. In this photo I am at the Port (left) side of the bow (front).

This was a spur of the moment trip, so my people did not have my stroller packed. Daddy had to carry me around every place I wanted to see!

Lucky for me, my Daddy has big strong arms! I love my Daddy!

Many of the ships had intricate figureheads! Usually in the shape of a beast or human female, these forms of bow ornamentation were introduced in the 16th century.

The purpose of a figurehead was to illustrate the ship's name in a non verbal manner, and the immense power of its owner.

Hhhmmmm. Do you see a resemblance?

One of the most thrilling aspects of the Tall Ships Festival is getting to board a ship and take a tour! The Etoile, built in Normandy, France, in 1932 seems like a good choice.

Etoile means "Star" en Francais. Here we are about to storm the ETOILE! AARRGGHH!

Much to my chagrin, the sailors were armed. Although I carry concealed daggers in each toe, I am no match for their rifles. (Sigh). This instance reminds me of my military reenactment attempt at "St. Andrews by the Sea", when my people forgot to pack gun powder.....

Since I am still reeling from my adrenaline induced bravado, let us have a peek over the edge then....hmm....yep....looks wet.

I am almost overcome with an incredible urge to climb these ropes....

This photo makes it look like I DID climb the ropes! Ha Ha! It is just my people looking up at something.

During our adventure I was repeatedly swarmed by the Paparazzi! (The previous night I had my television debut on the Halifax local news.) So everywhere I went during the festival, people would shout out "That's the Cat I saw on T.V!" and crowd around for autographs.

All the attention and excitement was exhausting! I do not know how Hollywood celebrities manage!

The part I love most about meeting fans is getting petted!

Successful celebrities need to be able to multi task. Here I am taking a power nap while mom gives me a fitting for a new smoking jacket.

I like it! .....but how does my butt look?

STOP! Is that what I think it is? Yesss!

FLYING PING PONG BALLS! Brilliant!!! How do I get in?

Stand still daddy! I need to watch the ping pong balls!....Must stay awake....to............wa..t..ch....

Shopping Spree at Poochey Couture - 6 Meows out of 5

As a fashion expert, and naked cat I admit to having a small obcession with clothing and assesories. Here is a photo of my closet at home which contains my everyday wear. (I also have a trunk full of costumes such as a tuxedo, kimono, karate outfit etc.)

Due to the high cost of pet clothes and since I have five naturally built in knitting needles on each front paw , I did consider taking up this popular hobby. After renting a few knitting books from the library and buying some lucious yarn, I did not accomplish much! The tantilising yarn kept calling on me to chase and pounce upon it.

During my last trip to Montreal, I had the delight of visiting "Poochey Couture"! Although the marketing seems centered around canine fashion, I did not let this put me off. I am all about breaking down barriers and eliminating stereotypes.

This store has a fantastic array of sizes and styles, in a plethora of colours! There were plenty of fashionable options that flattered my long body and narrow chest. I tried on this "Argyle Hoodie Sweater" right away. I liked the texture so much that I kept it on for the rest of my shopping expedition. Here is the Argyle detail on the back. At $35, this sweater was above my budget, but I could not resist this pointy, tassled hood so I decided to splurge.

There are great toys as well! Here is an Ipod and a passport. I wonder if they have a credit card?

This hot pink "Juicy Couture Scottie Parka" on the left, actually made me drool! I knew I would look amazing in it, but the designer price of $110 was out of my budget.

I am also a frugal consumer, because I only earn a few dollars a week at my mom's flea market booth. Luckily, Poochey Couture has a clearance bin!

This white Terry Towel Hoodie with a regal rhinestone accent was only $11.00! It even has pockets for my important papers.

This "Lovely Heart Fleece Hoodie" was only $12.50! In a size small it covered me perfectly, all the way to my bottom.

Also, the hood has plenty of ear room. I feel just like my idol, the Pink Panther, in this getup!

Nofuratu's Fashion Tip: Do not let your sex determine what colour you wear. Style is all about what suits your body, and complexion. Real men, like myself, CAN wear pink!

I liked the fit and price of this line so much I purchased the "Star Power Fleece Hoodie" as well. It makes me look very sporty, no?

Then I headed to the collar rack to check out the bling. There were so many and I wanted them all! I decided to pick one in a colour that I did not have yet at home. Frugal consumers are all about having the basics.

I chose the sparkly, yet understated "Aviator Collar" for $20. It is my take on the "little black dress" but has some pink to flatter all my rosy outfits.

Mom really wanted me to try some of these speedy looking sneakers! However I reminded her that shoes fare better on dogs than cats. These would definitely upset my balance when I bounce around like "Tigger".

Speaking of "Tigger", this cat was on the Poochey Couture web site modelling the "Puffa Jacket". However, when I checked out the list of Poochey Couture's models, I saw only dogs! Could there be a need for a cat model? I will get my people to send them my curiculum vitae immediatly and keep you posted!

Poochey Couture also sells cakes and treats! All of which are tested on humans first, for pet safety. I picked up a box of "Master Foo Fortune Cookies" for some of my canine friends.

I spotted this "Jellybean Couture Camo Sling Carrier" dangling from the ceiling and had to have it! Since I go on so many adventures it is important to be carried around in a sturdy, yet stylish bag. It has many pockets for my snacks, business cards, leash etc and a handy button fly slit to peek my head out at the side! It is quilted for comfortable travel and even has a safety clip to attach to a harness.

It is a handmade work of art with ribbons to play with when I get bored! $75 is a good deal for a bag I will use a few times a week. How do I look? This handsome bloke, Eric, was my fantastic personal shopper! He was very knowledgeable of the stock and store events. Poochey Couture holds annual parties for Valentines Day, Halloween etc. He was friendly no matter how many times I asked him to reach up high for something, and then changed my mind! My Poochey Couture experience was so delightful I gave them 6 meows out of 5. It was that great! Poochey Couture also sells online for those who can not travel to Montreal, Canada. It is important to say that I did NOT receive any monies or gifts from Poochey Couture to do this review. As an accomplished critic, I prefer to pose as an ordinary consumer so I can do an honest review.

Vampire Christmas at the Cat Show

This Christmas I posed for a photo shoot with the talented Danielle Bourque! I am concentrating very hard in this photo, because believing in Santa is serious business!

Here is a photo of another serious believer, my friend "Hibou"! You may recognize him from my previous blog on the Chickadee cat show, where we first met.

I also entered my THIRD cat show! This number may surprise you since my last blog was about my FIRST cat show. It is not a typo. I type with a high degree of accuracy. I decided to blog about my second cat show later, so this Christmas blog would have an appropriate theme.

On November 27th, 28th and 29th, 2009, Club Felin de Montreal put on three shows entitled "Le Noel des chats". That is "Christmas of the Cats" to my non francophone fans. Since this show was three days long, with 4 different judges each day, I would have at least 12 opportunities to win ribbons! Montreal is a 10 hour drive from my home in New Brunswick! Here I am taking in the sights. I am also very excited about doing some shopping! Are we there yet? For more images of me driving, check out my "Road Trippin" blog.
There was a contest for "Best Decorated Cage" with a Christmas theme. It was difficult to decide on a Christmas theme that would work with my elaborate "coffin cage". We decided on a "Vampire Christmas" display. Here I am snoozing on my pillow in front of the fire place!

Here I am wearing my Santa hat! My coffin is decorated for Christmas and I have a tree with blood red ornaments. My framed photo of "Nosfuratu" is on the wall and outside the window is a Vampire Snowman! My fireplace mantle has a bust of "Bella Lugosi" the king of Vampire actors, and stockings filled with sunglasses, sunblock, teeth whitener and a bottle of "true blood" in case I get hungry! On the far left is one of my ribbons!

Here I am accepting my "Best Decorated Cage" Award! The results were a tie! Both winners received a $50 gift card to spend at the show!Daddy, sporting my "Go Naked" T shirt, is laughing with the lady because I am actually speaking into the microphone! We Sphynx cats are very vocal!

Here is the cage. C'est tres Chic n'est pas? There are even reindeer on the roof!....and Christmas wallpaper and carpet inside!

This is what I purchased with my award money! A round paw print bed with washable cover, a fleecy "snuggle sack" with cat fabric, a dancing dragonfly toy (which I am staring at), a beaded string dancing toy and cat nip treats for my brother "Vampir" back at home.

This fantastic cage earned an honorable mention!

This is a beautiful Sphynx kitten I met. There were quite a few Sphynx cats competing in this show, but not in my category.

Cats are not judged according to who is prettier. Each cat is judged against its own breed standard. That means I am compared to what a perfect Sphynx should look like, and a Siamese is compared to what an ideal Siamese looks like, etc. Here I am being judged in one of the rings. A cat's personality/temperament is not supposed to be judged. However, I think some judges were offended by my hissing, spitting and yowling in ALL TWELVE RINGS! (Even though I kept my teeth and claws to myself) I placed in the top ten in only two rings. I won a 5th place and 10th place ribbon.

I did enjoy trying out these fantastic "Cloud Nine" Cat trees! I wanted to take this home but it cost $500. That is like my $50 winnings, but with an extra zero.

Time for well earned nap! I give "Le Noel des Chats" 5 meows out of five! There were lots of opportunities to win ribbons and fantastic cage decorations. I loved seeing other Sphynx cats and of course meeting new fans! Regardless of what ribbons I did or did not win, l know I am dashingly handsome, because my mommy says so!

My Debut at the Chickadee Cat Club Cat Show

So many of my fans sing to me of my beauty! I agree that I am also quite handsome. You may be surprised to hear that just as many people tell me, how ugly I am! I just dismiss them with a dirty look and a yawn and go back to napping. However, my mom, also a red head, gets upset when people are not tactful about expressing their abhorrence. In fact, just last week, a couple closely examined me and scrunched up their faces. Then the man asked mom "How do you keep something so ugly?" When she responded with "maybe you should ask your wife that!" I tried to calm her down by explaining it was clearly another case of bad vision and poor taste.

I thought a beauty pageant win might improve my image, but they do not accept feline applicants, so I tried the next best thing: A Cat Show!! On June 9th, 2009 I put on my game face and attended the Chickadee Cat Club's 2nd Annual Cat show in Frederiction, NB.

Although I am a purebred Sphynx, my people did not submit my paperwork in time, so I entered the show as a household pet. Many of you may be unaware that you can enter a cat show and win lots of ribbons even if you do not have a pedigree! Household pets are a vital part of cat shows and showing can be fun! You must be spayed/neutered but not declawed and are judged on condition, health, colour markings and temperament. For more information visit the CCA/AFC or TICA web sites.

Cat shows usually have a competition for the best decorated cage. You can use cages provided at the show or bring your own as long as itt meets certain specifications. This lovely pink creation was made by a young girl and received an honourable mention!

Since I am named after the vampire "Nosfuratu" a coffin seemed most appropriate. My people just happened to have the end 1/3 section of a human coffin lying around the house. (Long story to be explained in a later blog). With a few minor modifications and a lot of hot glue ...

My people were able to whip up this bad boy! It stays open when I use it and the lid closes for easy storage or transport. Since rules state the cage must be easy to open in the front but also securely hold a cat, we attached clear vinyl to the opening with velcro!

We cut air "holes" in the shape of claw slashes and lined the inside of my coffin with soft red velvet.

It even has a chandelier with working lights and a framed photo of "Nosfuratu". Cages must be equipped with a sleeping area, litter and food and water. This photo shows my black velvet pillow and blanket beside my litter box, labeled "Transylvanian Dirt". Hanging on the wall above are some more pictures and my food and water bowls. We even put a skull and crossbones decal on the lid! For the table backdrop, mom painted a graveyard scene with a creepy tree and added a raven prop.

In this picture you can see the full setup, with me sitting on my cushion outside my cage. These children had their faces painted and posed with me!

The crowds started to get big at my booth! I love meeting new fans!

These two lovely boys, Oliver and Hibou, were my neighbors at the show. We all got along famously perhaps because we are the same colour.

Here is Hibou posing with one of his ribbons. He has a beautiful nose. I am convinced we are twins separated at birth! Along with the cat show, it was one of my people's birthdays! Mikey, shown below with a portrait of me on his cheek, had his 12th birthday party at the show.

He invited some friends and they all wore baseball caps with my face and slogan "Go Naked!" For lunch I packed them each a "Cat Lovers Lunch" with tuna, goldfish crackers, jerky and milk.

We also made a Litter box Birthday cake! (Chocolate cage sprinkled with graham crackers and macaroons) The fudge icing looks like cat poop! We velcroed a stuffed cat to the edge in a compromising position and cut pieces with a new scooper. Here is Daddy and Alex posing with the remains of the cake. A few passers by actually thought they were playing with poopies!

On with the show! This is me waiting to be judged in one of the rings. This show had six show rings with different judges. Each gives out ribbons for 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th place. Then, all the cats that win a 1st place ribbon compete in a final ring called "Best of the Best".

There I am at the first ring! You may be able to tell from the photo that it turns out I hate to be judged....and examined....I also have a terrible potty mouth! Who knew? Luckily, this judge just laughs at my insults.

I stop to sniff a little in this ring but still spit and swear at the judge! My mom and dad are shocked! I am well behaved at the flea market every weekend where lots of people pet me all day. I am an angel when we go into stores, restaurants and hospitals.....everyone comments on how friendly I am!

But not in the show ring! There I am telling the judge to @#%%$ off! In hindsight, I am also surprised and a little ashamed of my behavior!

There I go yowling and swearing again! Good thing these pictures do not come with sound or I would have to be bleeped!

Everyone seems to think it may be the smells of all the other cats that has upset me so! I do not know what gives people that silly idea!

Oh! well, it could have been the fact that I started picking fights with the other cats in the ring.....but I see other professional atheletes trash talking eachother on the sports network all the time!

This judge seems to understand my woes and we chat together for a few minutes. She told me she would write down all my complaints and forward them to management. Then she awards me with a 2nd place ribbon!

Along with making new fans, I liked being around other cats that are as spoiled as I am. This cat has his own sofa to lounge on!

There were also lots of vendors at the show with great accessories for sale. This kitty has purchased a fleecy rug with a strong sleeping potion.

So that was my very first cat show! I give the show 5 meows out of 5 without including the judging rings. I think it is clear that I do not like to be judged! I did get to meet lots of friendly people and enjoyed sitting at my booth.

As far as beauty is concerned, I have learned a valuable lesson! As long as you know you are beautiful, and your mother agrees, that is all that matters!

Nofuratu Goes Trick-or-Treating

Halloween is a big event for my people. Before the big night we throw a pumpkin carving party and all the guests come in costumes.

Even our dog "Gritts" (an 11 yr old Coonhound/Wolfhound mix) gets dressed up.

Here are my grandparents, Bruno and Connie. She made this superb dress from scratch! She also made my Daddy's costume.....

Here we are together. He is a "Sponge Pocket"! This outfit IS very slimming just like the commercial says.

This is my friend "Biscuit" posing with Daddy. Every Halloween we go "Trick or Treating" but have to drive to each house because we live in the countryside. This Halloween, Biscuit invited me over to his place. He is a city dog and has assured me we will get more treats in less time because city houses are closely situated. I believe him because a dog named Biscuit must know where the treats are!

Now I must find the right costume! I tried on my Devil outfit but it was too small.....

I tried on my Super Cat cape but it was too boring...even if I added an "S" shaped tail.

I considered my Spidey Cat shirt....but worried about being mistaken for a real super hero! Then I might have to save the planet instead of collecting treats.

I put on my Mermaid outfit and even asked my pet fishies what they thought!

H2O, up in the left corner of the photo, thought I would freeze my butt off and my orange fishie, Spot, does not talk much.

I look very handsome in my bumble bee gear! But it is not scary enough...

My turtle costume is warm and even has a pocket in which to store my treats! But turtles move too slowly for trick or treating.....I needed something speedy!

Rabbits are fast! I will wear my "Happy Bunny" costume. For those of you not familiar with "Happy Bunny", he is a grumpy bunny who says mean things.

Sometimes my wrinkles make ME look grumpy so I think I can play the part well. Also, this costume is very warm. Here I am all snug in my stroller and ready to go!

But first I get a warning from Brad about the dangers of speeding, on behalf of the RCMP. I assure him I will not exceed the 40 Km per hour speed limit, while crossing my fingers under my blanket. Off we go!

TRICK OR TREAT!!!!

Some people are a little surprised to see a half naked cat trick or treating...

As usual, I win them over with my charm.

Nofuratu's Travel Mugs for Charity!

Winter is coming to New Brunswick, Canada. It snowed here yesterday! My people are always coming up with new ways to keep me warm in our drafty old Victorian home. Here is a photo of me with my new hot water bottle! It has a knitted penguin cover! I wish my mom knew how to knit because I would look fabulous in a matching knit penguin turtleneck!

Most naked cats would be thinking about settling down to hibernate with this cold weather. However, my entrepreneurial mind can not stop spinning. Since I raised so much money for "Run for the Cure", I have been wondering about fundraising for homeless animals this winter. As I was drinking my peppermint tea before bed I came up with a brilliant plan!

"Nofuratu" travel mugs! Now my fans can take me everywhere and stay hydrated! (because there is nothing worse than a dehydrated fan!)

Here are the mugs I had my people whip up. In front, is the picture insert flattened out so you can see it properly. It has my motto, "Go Naked!" We made two different mugs. The larger one is more durable and flashy and the smaller one is more thrifty.

How much is shipping and handling? Shipping depends on where you live. My people can give you a quote from Canada post. There is no mark up on shipping and no handling fees. My people use recycled packing materials that cost little or nothing.

If 50% of profits go to a pet charity, where does the other 50% go? That goes to moi, because I am 50% selfish and spoiled. I spend all my money on clothes, treats, toys, travel accessories and fuzzy blankets and beds. In fact, I am a little bit addicted to this fabulous material called "Microfiber" which is a tad pricey!

How do you manage to be so handsome and smart? Like most felines, I sleep a minimum of 13 hours a day, which covers my beauty sleep and gives me lots of time to solve the mysteries of the universe.

Nofuratu raises $200 for Breast Cancer Research!

Although this was my second year participating in this event, it was technically my first OFFICIAL year this October 4th, 2009. (Last year I just tagged along with my humans). This year I registered all by myself and got to wear my own number!
You may be wondering how a naked cat registers for something like this? It is easy. You just need a name, address and human to fill out the forms . I registered under the first name "Nofuratu" and the last name "Thenakedcat".

I raised at total of $200 in pledges! How did I raise so much? My advice is to look cute and ask for real money, not cat treats. Here I am posing with my entry number in my stroller. Because I am so bundled up, it is difficult to see my pink cordoroy coat with faux fur trimmed hood. I decided to travel with my Pink Panther doll for good luck.

Many people tell me I look just like the Pink Panther! I agree we are both very handsome. Sometimes when I am slinking about I hear the Pink Panther theme song. At first I thought it was just playing in my head, but my people say they hear it too! Perhaps I will write to the Pink Panther some day and offer to be his stunt or body double......when I am not so busy with my own adventures.

Speaking of strollers.....this is how I looked in it before we had to travel 5 km in the pouring rain. My people did a fabulous job pinking it up for me.

Pinkaboo! Here is a rear view where you can see a little of my fur trim hood. My vehicle even has a back window so I can make sure I know who is pushing me around. It is also useful for ordering drive through snacks!

Here I am with three of my people as the walk begins. I wanted to run the whole 5km but my people are not as athletic as I, so despite my months of training, we had to walk.

This is us about a kilometer in. If you look way back into the horizon you can see all the heads of the 1700 other participants.

The next 4km took place on a mud path through the woods! We got to appreciate the beautiful autumn leaves and listen to the gurgling stream.

Despite the very bumpy ride, and my people's ridiculously inept driving, I was still able to doze off. If you look closely and concentrate you can see my wrinkled head and left ear snuggling below my pink panther.

These are some gorgeous dogs I had the pleasure of meeting before the run began. It is hard to see me in my stroller because the windshield wipers are not working. Many dogs brought their people to the run this year! Dogs are very good at braving all sorts of bad weather.

Here are two more fashionable dogs I saw at the run. Abby, on the right, looks so happy about the rain she is smiling!

Being the only official naked cat participant, I made it into the paper again! For those of you keeping track, this is my third feature in the Moncton Times and Transcript.

Here is a shot of me with my people. I am not sure how they got their driver's licences, but they were great at helping me on this philanthropic venture! From shortest to tallest is Mackenzie, Michael, Alex, Mom (Aislynne) and Daddy (Brett). You can not really see me because the photographer cut my head off.

Great Day for a Parade

This summer I decided to increase my skill sets! The job description on my business cards (Critic, Philanthropist and Entrepreneur) seemed insufficient. I had been saving up my allowance to enroll in an aerospace engineering course. However, in the midst of this recession I committed to a more prudential "Paws On" learning.

What is the best skill to learn in the trenches, with the people? Yes! Activism! Since this was my first crack at being an Activist I wanted to begin with a small, benign issue ......like............Human Rights!! So I signed up to be in the Moncton "River of Pride" Parade!
I think some humans are a little confused by "Pride" Parades and think you must be gay to join in. All you need to "Be" is supportive of human rights...and if you have the luxury of opposable thumbs you can wave a flag!

The first step in becoming an activist is to let everyone know you are participating in an event. That means a Press Release and press releases need photos! I picked out this eye catching rainbow turtleneck and got straight to work with my camera people. The best part of this session, aside from dressing up, was getting to play with the rainbow coloured paperclips!

Our next task was to decorate my float! The parade route would be too long to peruse on my leash and besides, professional activists ride on floats! There was not enough time to make a large platform float so we improvised! Activists need to be flexible. It is hard to see through the disguise, but if you look very close and concentrate you can see it is my stroller under the explosion of "rainbow". The basket at the front holds my candies to throw to the crowd!

Speaking of disguises, I was not the only non-human parader. The greyhounds were there! This one is dressed in chic drag! Many beautiful greyhounds need loving homes you know. Here is a website with lots of greyhound adoption information

The most important prop for an activist is a banner! I had my people whip one up to carry in front of my float. You may recognise my portrait on the right from my 5 meow review of Peggy's Cove!

Lavish costumes are crucial in a parade if you really want to be noticed! I decorated my people each in a colour of the rainbow with an assemblage of balloons and ribbon breezing behind them.

To achieve a polished look, a baton twirler at the head of the procession is vital! Luckily, one of my people, Mikey, is an accomplished rotationalist!

Nofuratu's Fast Fact: The Rainbow, used by the Gay, Lesbian and Transgender community since 1978, is popularly embraced as a symbol for multiculturalism and political movements. Some of you may remember Jesse Jackson's Rainbow Coalition. It also appears in many myths and stories related to gender and sexuality issues in Greek, Native American, African, and other cultures.

After the parade there was a great rally by the river with fabulous performers, musicians and guest speakers! There was sunshine, dancing and camaraderie..........

My good friend, and co-worker Turner came to say hello! Turner is a superbly coiffed Pomeranian who also has a booth at the flea market. We meet up regularly and discuss the latest Parisian fashion trends while sipping Lattes.

By the end of the rally I was all rainbowed out!
